Annunciations: Sacred Music for the Twenty-First Century

Annunciations coverA new book on the reciprocal relationship between theology and music, edited by Dr. George Corbett, has launched.

My chapter (#9: “Setting Fire to Music”) features critical reflections on the collaborative process, specifically in creating a choral setting for Exodus 3 (the ‘burning bush’) with composer Kerensa Briggs.

Annunciations explores the collaborative process of creating ‘theologically-informed performance’ of scriptural texts for the TheoArtistry Composers’ Scheme, hosted by the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts (ITIA) at the University of St Andrews.

Through the theme of ‘annunciations’, this volume interrogates how, when, why, through and to whom God communicates in the Old and New Testaments. In doing so, it tackles the intimate relationship between scriptural reflection and musical practice in the past, its present condition, and what the future might hold.

Chapters contributed by established and emerging scholars, as well as some rising stars of musical composition.

The volume, published by Open Book Publishers, is available in hardback, paperback, and digital open access.
